All consonants in brackets () are allophones of other consonants.

[h] only appears in the beginning of words - within or at the end of a word, it changes to [x] after non-front vowel or [ç] after front vowel.

Voiceless consonants switch to their voiced counterparts between vowels - this does not affect /h/ and its allophones.

Consonant mutationEdit

Just like in Celtic languages, the consonants of a word can sometimes mutate in certain constructions.

Consonant mutation is limited to single consonants in the beginning of a word and only plosives can be mutated.

There are two different mutations: hard mutations and soft mutations.

In hard mutations ...

  • [p] becomes [f]
  • [t] becomes [θ]
  • [k] becomes [ʃ]

In soft mutations ...

  • [p] becomes [v]
  • [t] becomes [ð]
  • [k] becomes [ʒ]
